Teacher - Devon Hospitals’ Short Stay School
- Exeter, Devon
- Full Time
- MPS

To start 1st January 2027
Fixed term for 12 months (potentially extended pending funding discussions)
As a Devon LA maintained school (4-16), we offer a unique and supportive environment, making our school a rewarding place to work and learn. We are supported by a committed group of active Governors. We teach a wide variety of young people, some of whom are amongst the highest attaining in the country and some who have a range of additional learning needs. We teach young people who are at the beginning of their school careers and, sadly, some who are near the end of their lives. The majority of our students are of secondary age. We provide education for young people who are in-patients at the RDUH Trust, but most of our work is through the LA Section 19 referral process. Learning happens at our Outreach Centre in Exeter and online for those who are not able to attend in person for medical reasons.
We are looking to appoint a highly qualified teacher who can teach a range of subjects at Key Stages 3 and 4, ideally including at least one core subject to GCSE. The post will initially be for a 12-month period based at our Outreach Centre in Exeter with possible travel to The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter and, very occasionally, to the North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple. You will be required to teach across the full age and attainment range. Learning takes place in very small groups and is often 1:1 due to the nature of our students’ medical needs.
The post holder will adhere to the professional duties of a teacher as set out in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions of Service document and school policies. As part of our team, you will be well-supported in your professional development and we pride ourselves on our culture which allows teachers to thrive in their roles, and which prioritises staff wellbeing. This post could serve as an ideal reminder of why you came into teaching in the first place – to make a real difference to individual children’s lives.
For an informal discussion about the post please contact Laura Webb, Headteacher on 07458 095329, or email: laura.webb@devon.gov.uk.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English. Online searches may be done as part of pre-recruitment checks.
