Supporting families of children and young people with vision impairment in Devon and Cornwall
Area: Devon/Cornwall/occasionally Somerset
Probationary Period: 3 months
Required to start 1 April 2026. This post is temporary for one year.
MoorVision is a small but successful charity supporting 280 children with vision impairment and vision impairment plus other disabilities across Devon and Cornwall. We pride ourselves on a busy, active, varied and interesting programme of frequent activities and events as well as offering many other support services.
Moorvision is recruiting for an Activities Co-ordinator to arrange events and activities and support children with vision impairments (some with other additional needs) and their families in these activities both face-to-face and occasionally online. The successful applicant would be working with one other part-time activities co-ordinator and would be line managed by the charity Chief Executive Officer.
Moorvision has an office in Ivybridge, Devon. The successful candidate would need to spend approximately half of their hours at the office, and the other half can be worked there or from home though there may be flexibility with this for the right candidate. They also need to be available for a minimum of two weekend days per month (possibly more in December) and for 1-2 weekend residential trips per year.
Training will be given in equality and diversity, safeguarding, risk assessing, visual impairments, paediatric first aid, confidentiality/data storage, behaviour management and IT.
This is a very rewarding role, and the candidate will be self-motivated, creative and have empathy with children, young people and families.
The role will include:
• Contacting families about events via email, phone and social media.
• Researching and booking events and co-ordinating with events staff and venues.
• Risk assessing events and venues.
• Maintaining database of families attending and recording any financial contributions made.
• Managing events (with advice and support initially).
• Supporting children and their families at events.
• Co-ordinating and working with volunteers at events.
The ideal candidate will:
• Have experience of working with children preferably with a disability and/or have lived experience of sight loss in childhood.
• Have a minimum of three GCSE/O Level equivalents (grades 5+, A-C) including Maths and English or equivalent qualifications.
• Be able to work independently and as part of a small team.
• Be patient, enthusiastic and confident.
• Have good written and spoken communication skills.
• Be organised and pay attention to detail.
• Be able to work in Microsoft Word and Outlook and willing to be trained to use Excel and other databases.
• Be able to use social media.
• Be able to take part in sports such as climbing, canoeing, zip wiring, swimming etc.
• Have a full driving license
• Undertake any job-related training as required.
Other Information
Holiday Pay
Staff are entitled to the pro-rata equivalent (on a 37.5 hour week) of 28 days or 5.6 weeks PLUS 1 extra day after completing 2 full years of service and an additional 1 day per year after that up to a maximum of 35 days. Bank holidays are included in the above.
There are 3 non-negotiable ‘closure’ days to be taken between Christmas and the New Year. The holiday year runs from 1st September to 31st August.
Holiday should be booked at least a month in advance with the agreement of your line manager. We are very sympathetic to holidays being taken to tie in with school holiday dates wherever possible.
Sick Pay
Staff fulfilling the conditions in our sick pay policy and post probation can claim:
2 weeks full pay plus 2 weeks half pay, plus an additional day of full and half pay per each year worked (up to a maximum of 20 days of each).
For sickness beyond this length of time, statutory sick pay (SSP) will be paid for employees earning about the SSP earnings limit for up to 28 weeks.
Please note: if the rate of your half pay is less than the rate of SSP, you will always be paid at the higher SSP rate.
