Helping Families in need

We are a specialist family service working alongside families who need intensive, multi-agency support to help prevent the need for social care intervention and aim to improve outcomes for the whole family. At Devon County Council, we are committed to supporting and helping local families in need. We want to be there for families as early as possible, so that we can help them to overcome their problems and stay together.  As part of Early Help we contribute to the National Troubled Families programme. A framework of six broad themes help to identify the families we work with:

•             crime and anti-social behaviour;

•             education and attainment;

•             specific support need;

•             work and finance;

•             being safe; and

•             physical and mental health.

The team works intensively and holistically with families, primarily in the home, to reduce needs over time which is why we’re looking for local people to work with us as Family Practitioners.
This is a fixed term post ending on 31 March 2020.

An Introduction to the role and key responsibilities

The role involves providing intensive support to families with multiple and complex needs, supporting them with appropriate skilled interventions, both practically and emotionally. This will involve working with families in the home and community in close partnership with other agencies.  This may be in response to crisis or for some families as part of a long term support package.  As a Family Practitioner you will provide a key working role to families referred to the service; assessing needs, developing action plans, setting and reviewing targets, providing interventions and coordinating the input from other service providers. As well as keeping accurate, up-to-date electronic records of your work, you will attend and lead Team around the Family meetings.  We also deliver evidence-based parenting programmes to groups of parents and their teenage children.

What sorts of skills do you need?

Previous experience of working with families who have multiple and complex needs and a working knowledge of the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults. You should be empathetic and understanding, but at the same time, persistent, tenacious and assertive. An ability to listen and offer practical solutions, an honest approach, and to support and challenge is needed to enable people to make positive changes in their lives. You will need a flexible approach to working hours, as there is a need to work some evenings and weekends.
