Social worker

Post Adoption Team.

From 1st October, adoption teams in the south west are joining up. On this date, the adoption teams from Somerset, Plymouth, Torbay and Devon councils will merge into a new regional adoption agency, Adopt South West.

Opportunities have arisen for two qualified social workers (ideally with three years post-qualifying experience) to provide support to adoptive families in the North of the region. These posts will primarily cover Somerset cases, however, you may be expected to cover other areas across the region and beyond when needed.

The main duties will involve undertaking support assessments and reviews, providing therapeutic support to families, advocacy, and making Adoption Support Fund applications. This position will also involve supporting families who are in crisis, or where there is concern about placement stability. You will also be required to deliver workshops to parents and help facilitate support groups and assist in the delivery of therapeutic parenting courses. This role will include adult adoption counselling, including writing file summaries for adult adoptees and will also involve offering birth family support when needed.

You need to have experience of working with children and families and ideally safeguarding, adoption and group work experience.  You must demonstrate an up to date knowledge of social work practice in relation to permanence and understand the needs of adoptive families and adoptees.  You need to be well organised and able to manage and prioritise your own workload and work independently at times.

Please note, flexible working hours, travelling and some working out of the county may be required. This post will benefit from peer mentoring and monthly supervision to support you in this role.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

This role requires a DBS disclosure.

This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
