The Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) is in place to ensure that all newly qualified social workers receive dedicated, consistent and effective support in their first year of practice, enabling them to approach their career in social work with confidence. The 12 month programme offers a positive introduction to social work with adults in Devon and the profession in general. Our teams enjoy supporting ASYEs, and with one of our Team Managers winning the title of Team Manager of the Year at the recent Social Worker of the Year Awards, it’s a good time to join us.

Social Work in Devon

We are building on a strong foundation in adult social care, with an integrated service model that puts people at the centre of planning support. Professional social work is core to the service we offer. As we seek to increase social work roles, and increase opportunities for specialist higher-level qualifications, we’re looking for newly qualified practitioners who can commit to a challenging and rewarding career. Your commitment to representing your profession, and to personal development, will be the key driver in continuing to achieve better outcomes for vulnerable adults.

About the Role

Joining us as an ASYE Social Worker is a chance to apply what you’ve learnt to real situations, alongside developing your skills and knowledge. You will be supported to practice and develop your skills in assessment and solution-focussed support planning. You will be supported to apply theory, legislation and policy to your practice. Providing a high quality and effective social work service, your varied role will include everything from completing assessments and reviews, undertaking safeguarding enquiries, planning support, and working with integrated professionals to manage, negotiate and resolve conflicts.

You will play a leading role in the multi-disciplinary team to assess adults and their carers; to plan and arrange or deliver focussed intervention, and to safeguard people at risk.  You will promote positive outcomes in all that you do.

Most of your time will be carrying out practical social work but this is also a perfect opportunity to train, learn and ask questions, and we will allocate 20% study time (pro rata) to support you in your role.

About You

You will come to us fully qualified to degree level in social work, with an up-to-the-minute understanding of policies and processes and some experience of working within a social care environment. Passionate, person-centred and eager to learn, you’ll be ready to make that all-important step from education into your chosen profession. You will feel confident managing conflicts, solving problems and dealing with challenging situations. Proactive and assertive in your approach, you are confident in making best judgements but you won’t be afraid to ask questions, building effective working relationships with your professional network. It almost goes without saying that your communication and organisation skills are second to none – you’ll feel comfortable interacting clearly and effectively with people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

About Us

One of the largest counties in the UK, Devon is rich in scenery, food and culture. But like any other part of the country, we have diverse, complicated and challenging social issues. We are forward thinking, and plan for challenges now and ahead.  We have an active policy of recruiting ASYEs into our vacant posts which takes place twice a year, April (to start in October) and September (to start in January).

To be eligible for the ASYE programme you need to have qualified within the last 2 years. Please state in the Education, Training and Development section of the application form the date of your Social Work qualification or when you are due to qualify.
