1 x North Devon AMHP Team (North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple)

These posts are assigned to Devon Partnership NHS Trust within the daytime dedicated AMHP Service. This role links in with adult mental health services and is open to registered social workers, occupational therapists and mental health nurses currently approved (or eligible for approval) to practise as an AMHP.

1 x North Devon  – Social Care AMHP Team (work base to be negotiated)

1 x East & Mid Devon – Social Care AMHP Team (work base to be negotiated)

These posts are located within the Devon County Council daytime AMHP Service – Social Care AMHP Team. These roles link in with our Adult Community Health and Social Care Teams.  These posts are only open to qualified and registered social workers or occupational therapists currently approved (or eligible for approval) to practise as an AMHP

All posts are full time, 37 hours per week (consideration will be given to part-time working and should be discussed at interview)

Our service

The Daytime AMHP Service was awarded the “Social Worker Team of the Year – Adult Services Award” in 2016 and was Highly Commended at the 2017 “Positive Practice in Mental Health Awards” in the category of Mental Health and Social Care and is committed to influencing the national debate and development of AMHP services. We are constantly seeking ways to improve our service. In 2018 we began a process of co-production with those that have experience of being assessed under the Act and we are currently seeking to further refine what we do for the benefit of those who come into contact with our service.

Approved Mental Health Professionals

The role of daytime AMHPs within Devon County Council has significantly changed in recent times. Consisting of five locally dedicated AMHP teams, with support from those AMHPs based in Adult Social Care, our AMHPs no longer carry caseloads within community teams. Instead, our AMHPs work more flexibly with internal and external partners to ensure a more robust response to those individuals who are at risk of being detained or restricted under the Mental Health Act. Along with frontline duty, our AMHPs routinely and proactively work with crisis teams, wards, community teams, street triage, police, CAMHS and other services to ensure the most appropriate legal response. In addition, our AMHPs will also have a small allocation of community MHA and social supervision patients with the aim of supporting those individuals and their treating teams with the management of those orders.

Assigned daytime AMHP Teams (South & West Devon and North Devon posts)

AMHPs in this part of the service are assigned into Devon Partnership NHS Trust. While the majority of your work will be focussed within your particular geographical area, occasionally there will be some expectation to cover the work of other AMHP teams in order to help facilitate their team days and at times of high level demand on the service as a whole. Occasionally we are required to assess Devon patients who find themselves outside of the local authority area.

The South & West Devon AMHP post is based within the Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team currently in the process of relocating from its Plymouth base to Ivybridge. Although located in this team, the post is managed by the locality AMHP Team Manager for that area and the post holder works across a number of teams, as well as providing expertise into their host team.

The North Devon AMHP Team has a central office base at the North Devon District Hospital. It connects closely key mental health services and liaison services in that area, as well as having excellent working relationships with Police and other service providers across North Devon.

Social Care AMHP Team (North Devon and East & Mid Devon)

In addition to undertaking rota and off-rota generic duty work as an AMHP, you will be responsible for linking principally with the Community Health and Social Care Teams based in your locality. For both the North Devon and East & Mid Devon posts, the aim is to establish a regular presence and effective working relationships locally, while still remaining focussed on the core AMHP business.  You may in addition be required at times to link with other Community Health and Social Care Teams across the county. As with the above posts, there is the occasional requirement to assess Devon patients in hospitals outside of the local authority area.

There is potential for the successful candidates to negotiate which work base best suits them within their chosen locality.

Professional support and on-going training

All AMHPs receive regular individual and peer group supervision and appraisal. Teams are supported to have regular team days. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to both their own learning and that of others. Devon County Council also offers a programme of post-qualifying AMHP training in order to support your practice and on-going approval as an AMHP.

As a service we are keen to support colleagues to find creative and interesting ways to share specialist AMHP knowledge and support the learning of those outside our team.

About you

You will be a be a registered social worker, occupational therapist or mental health nurse (except for the positions within the Social Care AMHP Team) with a proven track recommitment to professional development and experience of working with people in mental health crises. In particular, we are interested in those who are seeking to develop and improve AMHP services and are open to working flexibly and creatively where-ever possible. You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of co-production and a willingness to engage with experts by experience.

You should hold current AMHP approval or be prepared to submit a portfolio to be re-approved in-line with Devon County Council’s policies.

You must be able to demonstrate an excellent appreciation and understanding of the European Convention of Human Rights, be committed to the principles of mental health legislation, with a strong focus on recovery principles and awareness of the impact mental disorder can have on an individual, their family, carers and supporters. You should have demonstrable experience in statutory mental health services, with a specific focus on risk management and multi-agency working.
