An exciting opportunity is currently available with our Specialist Placements Team for social workers who are looking for a new challenge where they can develop their skills
The Specialist Placements Team focuses on the out of county placements (except Plymouth and Torbay) for Adult Devon service users with a Learning Disability and / or Autism. This team was set up in 2013 in the wake of the ‘Winterbourne View’ scandal to ensure that vulnerable individuals placed outside of Devon are closely monitored and reviewed.
The team is a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency team with 2 Devon Partnership Trust nurses also assigned to the team. There is a very close working relationship with our DPT colleagues who focus on people with a Learning Disability placed out of County in hospitals and other units. The nurses and social workers work very closely together to facilitate the discharge of people back in to the community, delivering the Transforming Care Agenda. This can be a protracted and complex process, requiring focus, persistence, assertiveness and diplomacy in co-ordinating with providers and a variety of agencies in Health and the Ministry of Justice amongst others. There is a focus on returning people to Devon where it is in their best interest to do so.
There is very much a ‘can do’ and flexible attitude within the team in supporting each other to progress the discharge / return of individuals or to ensure their placement remains appropriate, safe, and is progressing the person’s independence as much as possible. This team also has a very close and positive working relationship with our CCG colleagues, all joined in the aspiration that providing opportunities to live in the community outside of long term hospitals / units is the ideal option.
The post holder will be expected to contribute reports to CPA, Mental Health Tribunals, Section 117 meetings, Reviews and Manager’s hearings. These posts require the knowledge and skills of experienced and skilled social workers and could present an interesting new experience for experienced practitioners looking for a new challenge.
The Specialist Placements Team has a caseload spanning England and Wales. The post holders will be expected to travel around the country and have night stays away from home on a regular basis.
Due to the mobile nature of these posts they are ‘home-based’ workers. There are weekly briefings for the whole team each Monday, currently in Honiton.

An experienced and qualified Social Worker (CQSW, DipSW, BA Hons, MA or equivalent) who is registered to practice with Social Work England, you will have completed two years post qualifying practice for this role and be able to demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development, as we are committed to supporting you to look at post-qualifying opportunities during your career with us. Bringing a comprehensive working knowledge of the issues currently impacting on social care delivery, you will be up-to-date with policy and practice development.
The role requires travelling significant distances, sometimes in urgent situations and without prior notice, in a rural environment where public transport may not be available. Our posts all carry an essential car user role, and you will need to hold a current full driving licence and have access to a vehicle.

We are committed to your continuous professional development, doing all we can to help you to get the most from your career. We offer 21 days’ annual leave (plus 2 statutory days over the Christmas Period and Bank Holidays), rising incrementally to 29 days after 20 years’ service. We support flexible working and offer a generous pension. For people considering a move to the County, relocation expenses will be considered and should be discussed at interview.
You will enjoy excellent support and supervision, with regular opportunities to discuss and reflect on your practice, both with your line manager and peers.
