The Outdoors Group School is a new independent special school that is based outside in a woodland setting for learners with SEMH and ASD needs. We believe in developing the whole learner not just their academic ability. We use a project-based method allowing the learner to be completely autonomous contributing to a well-rounded education, based on skills for lifelong learning and personal development.
The school caters for KS2 and KS3 learners (ages 7-14) and aims to provide a space for learners to develop skillsets and a growth mindset that they have been unable to in previous settings. We work closely with learners’ support networks, both professional and familial, and try to create a holistic and engaging place for learners to grow.
We are now looking for four new members of staff to join our existing team to complement the skills already offered by our staff. It is essential that you have a love for the outdoors as the position is based 100% outside. In addition, you will have experience working 1:1 with learners, an understanding of SEMH and ASD as well as experience that relates to our learners’ specific needs, as detailed below:
Learner: aged 12 years - Exeter site
This learner has high levels of anxiety and SEMH and responds much better to males, therefore applications from males are encouraged. He has delays with literacy and numeracy skills, receptive and expressive language, social interaction and emotional awareness and regulation as well as independent learning skills.
Learner: aged 12 years - Exeter site
This learner has ASD and PDA. He has attention, concentration, social and independent learning skill needs, emotional regulation, safety awareness, issues with self-esteem and confidence, fine motor skill needs and sensory needs.
Learner: aged 9 years - Tiverton site
A vulnerable learner with high anxiety, ADHD, Attachment Disorder and SEMH. It is essential that his LSA develop a strong relationship with his family. This post is for 2 days per week (Thursday and Friday), to support his engagement with our enrichment programme both on and off site.
This learner has needs relating to following the lead of adults, managing transitions, receptive and expressive language, sharing and turn taking, attention and focus, independent learning skills, engaging with challenging work, literacy skills, emotional regulation, danger awareness, peer relationships and social understanding, sensory needs, reluctance to engage in PE, awareness of self-care.
Learner: aged 10 years - Tiverton site
This learner has intimate care needs and requires an early year’s approach due to his learning difficulties. He has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and has high levels of anxiety, needs emotional regulation, has sensory needs, does not fully understand social situations, does not cope with changes to routine and transitions and needs independence skills.
